چکیده
ABSTRACT We examine the column density distribution function (CDDF) and Doppler parameter from hydrodynamical simulations Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of Ly α forest at redshift 0 ≤ z 0.2. Allowing for a factor two uncertainty in metagalactic H $\, \rm \scriptstyle I \, $ photoionization rate, our are good agreement (1–1.5σ) with shape amplitude observed CDDF densities $10^{13.3}\rm cm^{-2}\le N_{\rm H\,{\small I}}\le 10^{14.5}\rm cm^{-2}$. However, widths simulated lines remain too narrow respect to COS data. argue that invoking AGN feedback does not resolve this discrepancy. also disfavour enhanced photoheating rates as potential solution, requires an unphysically hard UV background spectrum. If instead appealing non-canonical source heating, additional specific heat injection $u \lesssim 6.9\rm eV\, m_{\rm p}^{-1}$ is required ≲ 2.5 gas has $N_{\rm I}}\simeq 10^{13.5}\rm cm^{-2}$ by = 0.1. Alternatively, there may be unresolved line sight turbulent velocity component $v_{\rm turb}\lesssim 8.5\rm km\, s^{-1}(N_{\rm I}}/10^{13.5}\rm cm^{-2})^{0.21}$ coldest diffuse IGM.

Lyman-α Heating of Inhomogeneous High-redshift Intergalactic Medium
The intergalactic medium (IGM) prior to the epoch of reionization consists mostly of neutral hydrogen gas. Lyman-α (Lyα) photons produced by early stars resonantly scatter off hydrogen atoms, causing energy exchange between the radiation field and the gas. This interaction results in moderate heating of the gas due to the recoil of the atoms upon scattering, which is of great interest for futur...
متن کاملStrong Clustering in the Low Redshift Lyman-α Forest
The two-point correlation function, ξ, of Lyman-α forest is found to be large, ξ = 1.8 −1.2, > 90% confidence level, on the scale of 250-500 km/s for a sample of absorbers (0 < z < 1.3) assembled from HST Key Project Observations. This correlation function is stronger than at high redshift (z > 1.7) where ξ ≈ 0.2 for velocities > 250 km/s. Subject headings: quasars: absorption lines
متن کاملThe He II Opacity of the Lyman α Forest and the Intergalactic Medium
Primordial baryonic matter in the vast intergalactic space may be traced with Lyα resonance absorption by neutral hydrogen and singly ionized helium. The wavelengthaveraged He ii opacity shortward of 304(1+z) Å, as measured by low-resolution UV spectroscopy, is at least 4.5 times the H i opacity shortward of 1216(1+z) Å. While a part of the He ii opacity arises from the intergalactic regions th...
متن کاملInversion of the Lyman - α forest : 3 D investigation of the intergalactic medium
We discuss the implementation of Bayesian inversion methods in order to recover the properties of the intergalactic medium from observations of the neutral hydrogen Lyman-α absorptions observed in the spectra of high redshift quasars (the so-called Lyman-α forest). We use two complementary schemes (i) a constrained Gaussian random field linear approach and (ii) a more general non-linear explici...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Low-redshift Intergalactic Medium towards Pks1302–102
We present a detailed analysis of the intergalactic metal-line absorption systems in the archival HST/STIS and FUSE ultraviolet spectra of the low-redshift quasar PKS1302–102 (zQSO = 0.2784). We supplement the archive data with CLOUDY ionization models and a survey of galaxies in the quasar field. There are 15 strong Lyα absorbers with column densities logNHI > 14. Of these, six are associated ...
